This Scenario comes to us from Bkoption. It is a good one
Flexbone VS 5-3
..............................................F
....C.................W....................M................................S.............C ...........................E....T............N.........T.................E ....WR....................T......G........C.......G.........T..........TE ........................RB...................Q....................................RB ...............................................FB
Alignments Strong End is in a 7 tech (inside shade of TE) Strong DT is in a 3 tech (outside shade of G) Nose is head up Weak DT is in a wide 3 Weak E is in a wide 6 (outside shade of T) Sam is aligned outside of the DE Mike is stacked and there best LBer Will is aligned inside of DE (head up on the T) Free is a good athlete who supports the run well
Their best players in order are: Mike, strong End, Nose, weak End and Free. The rest are not poor players just not studs like these.
In the option: The End will take the FB nearly every time The Nose will read (2 gap) The Mike will scrap to QB The Sam will scrap to take the pitch but if the QB shows quick he will not pass him up. The Will will come down hill to take QB The Free will run the "alley" The corner will take the pitch
Please attack this defense with the run first. Also feel free to change the formation as you see fit.
(note) if you go unbalanced with a TE or OT they will stay in the same basic alignment.

OK, If they do not want to adjust to unblanced then we are going to run to the unblanced until they can prove that they are just more physical then we are. 1-We love to run zone option out of unblanced. We will take the plsd Slot/TE/and uncovered OT and triple the DE to first scrape LB. FB is going to work to Safety. And we will pitch off of the same. 2-OV out of unblanced. 3-We will also try and get some bigger splits inside and run FB zone. See if we can get the FB to "Bend" it behind the nose. 4-We may even cut down the SE split out of unbalanced and run rocket and IV with a crack switch scheme.

1st we will go unbalanced and run OV.
2nd - a play I got from Wofford. The Belly Option - BSG & BST - Scoop C - cutoff nose PSG - combo nose to MLB PST - block down on the 3 PSTE - block down on the 7 PSS - block down on OLB (if we ran it away from the TE - slot would block the DE & we would crack the OLB and pitch off of the Corner) FB - Get as wide as possible will take steps close to the belly (for a proximity fake) and get wide and seal everything to the inside & try to work up to FS QB - open up pivot to a 180 and gain as much ground as quick as possible attack the corner and pitch if necessary
**Wofford's OC said the run it because it is the 2nd quickest play to get outside besides rocket - and with their athletes (as well as ours) they need to capitalize on quicker plays because of their overall lack of speed
we put it in last year and it was a great play for us

Colee- Your belly option is almost the same as our zone option. The goal is the same. Seal everyone inside, use the FB to cut off inside out pursuit and pitch off of the PRS. This has been our best goalline play over the past 3 or 4 years.

We call it belly also but its the same thing, we usually run it with our outside zone blocking scheme. We run it with a down scheme and the guard pulling around and sealing inside also (not nearly as much as the zone because the RB blocking down on the DE is a big mismatch).
In OV are you guys going to washdown the 7 tech, auto pull or go ahead and read him. This alignment gives our OV fits.

Will you have your TE try and indside release on an inside shade? What usually happens in that situation? (Sometimes we get a situation where our guy can dip and rip by an inside shade and when its an easiest release situation they will go right ahead and go inside, for us this doesn't happen often)
Would anyone run Inside Veer to this front?

We would have him outside release vs an inside shade. He was not good enough to just wash down a shade.
I would run inside veer if I thought my Center and bksd G and bksd T could scoop and cut off the bksd. My fear being that any leak bksd would get my QB hit in the back. Because plsd we should get a good combo with the plsd G and T working the 3 to Mike. We would also Arc the TE to Sam. By arc'in the TE the plsd DE may have difficulties reading the arc block and would be slower to squeeze down to the FB.

One of the formations I like to run against the 5-3 is the unbalanced with a twin on the front side.
.................................Y.......G........C.......G.........T........OT..................................WR ..............................RB.................QB..................................................RB ....................................................FB
They have little choice but to bring the SLB out to cover him. Now the psg and pst do not have to worry as much about getting to the mike becasue the ot is free to come down right on him. the psrb will leave the sam (pitch read) and check the inside while he is working to the free.
Just curious would anyone consider going to more of a spread (no te) formation?

Coach, 2x2 and 3x1 under center has been really good for us. We throw at lot of quick screens cause nobody wants to cover our slots. We also like to run IV with a give/Keep option. Try to get the QB upfield ASAP with the both slots either base, bubble, or cowboy motion.

Coach,
I'd run the wing T down play to the FB. PSRB chip DE inside to M, TE down on DE, PST down on DT, PSG pull and kick out S, Backside will zone to stop penetration. QB reverse pivots-rides the FB-Sells the option. Run it against traditional 5-3s with DE outside of Wing and S over the TE and have been successful. If they slant the N then you can have problems. Thanks for the opportunity to participate.
