Below is this weeks new scenario. This was actually submitted and happened this past season. As it was sent to me this defense really gave the offense some fits. To make matters worse the ability to throw the ball was limited. This was the 1st time they had seen this front.
------------------------------------fs c---------------------------------------------------------------c ----------------s------olb--------mlb---------olb------b -------------------------4----------0--------4i 0.............................0......0.....c......0....0...................0 .............................0...............q..............0 ...............................................f
dline- average but the Nose was the best of the bunch. MLB- very active player but not great player. did a lot of switch games with the Nose. DT's 4i to the field w/OLB playing a 50 tech. to boundary 4tech w/olb stacked. DT's and OLB's would run an exchange stunt about 50% of the time. Spur & Bandit- sometimes walk up and edge blitz if motion to them they went to motion slotback right now. db's FS was not in they action much tended to let things happen in front of him and play cleanup. Corners good athletes with good speed, would come up and honor secondary force on run to them.
Coaches feel free to attack as you see fit. one thing that was asked is 1st try to get bets attack out of typical spread formation 1st, then do what ever you want to manipulate the formation. The coach who brought this to the table would like to see "how much I missed and where I went wrong"
ENJOY!!!!!

We see this front a lot. Our defense will be running it for the third season and 3 other teams in our district run some form of this defense. The games they can play can be confusing. We always try and give our guys an answer for whaever "they" do.
I want to accomplish a couple of things early on. 1. I want to put their 4/4i's in a bind by blocking him and not blocking him in as many ways as possible. EX - Outside release by T, inside release by T (when possible), Base or Reach block by T, Outside zoned by G and T and eventually add a TE and down block him as well as combo down with the TE. 2. I want to soften their best DL (the nose) by scooping (cutting) him as often as possible.
Out of the basic flex bone formation: When we get a 4i we have a good idea that that defender is responsible for the B gap or the Dive in our IV. We can then outside release the T on the Sam LB and take the RB from the Sam to the free (which we are not as worried about because he is not running the alley hard) On the side where the End and LB remain stacked we have to acount for the LB both inside and outside. We do this by inside releasing the T and sealing with the RB. Who ever gets there first makes the block and the other will continue to climb.
Fly (jet) sweep, probably to the 4i. PST = base the 4i PSG = pull for the widest un blocked defender (never pass up color) should pick up the $S. PSRB = Arc to the Sam (not a Wide arc block because of the position of the S, expect him to flow hard) PSWR = Stalk the C. FB = fake inside dive playside. should hold the Mike BSRB = flat motion take the hand off at FULL SPEED. don't cut up to soon, stay of the pulling Guards out side hip pad. Back side scoop. this is a great play to cut block the Nose guard.
Rocket toss to the 4i. PST / PSG = Outside zone 4i to the Sam. The tackle needs to get off onto the S quick but also has to be patient so he doesn't leave his partner out to dry. PSRB = arc block to $S PSWR = stalk the C Backside = scoop. another great play to cut the nose. FB = fake opposite direction. Should hold the Mike long enough to give the center a chance. BSRB = motion catch the ball wide and at full speed.
Midline to the 4i PSRB = Load block the $S PST = outside release to the Sam. This has to be real tight to the 4i so the Sam can't fall in on the FB. PSG = Combo down to the nose coming off to the backside LB C = Combo the nose with the PSG Get him off of the midline BSG = best angle to BSLB BST = base the 4 in case of cut back BSRB = we will use a flat motion to get the RB in position to lead up onto the MIKE. This alows us to combo the nose. FB = run the midline QB = read the first down lineman off the midline. in this case the 4i. if it is a pull read replace the read TIGHT.
If I didn't have any luck with the IV, Midline variation, Fly (jet) sweep or the rocket sweep and I am limited in the passing game I would be forced to go to either a trips / unbalanced formation and or bring in a TE, maybe even 2 TE's. The idea is to force them to adjust.
......................................TE.......G........C..........G..........T.......OT...............................WR ..................................RB.....................Q.......................................RB ...........................................................FB
If they don't bring someone over or slide the LB's to the unbalanced we have a #'s advatage

It seems we all want to be able to "Scoop" the nose with the center and bksd G. This allows us to outside release or work out the plsd G, plsd T, plsd Slot. What do you guys do when the NG and Mike are just better then you C and bksd G and you can no longer "Scoop" them?

The Mike being better doesn't usually keep us from scooping the nose. We will always acount for him (always except once when I was trying to re-invent the wheel at half time) in a regular fashion and if our center gets out then all the better. The only time we are usually hurt by a Mike backer is when our Tackles and Te's can't get a good release off of the Line of scrimmage.
A top notch Nose Guard, on the other hand, can give us serious trouble. We faced one this year that we could not do anything with. We couldn't scoop him, couldn't baseblock him and could barley double him. He was a "reading" or 2 gap nose so we used some misdirection and even wrong stepped him from time to time with minimal success (worked better than anything else). I will also allow my center to use a crab block (scramble) when the play allows it.
To directly answer the question "what do you do?" I say, find a way (scheme wise) to get a double team or at least a combo block on the Nose Guard.

We would veer block triple and load the end. Read the tackle olb stack pull and pitch off the stack. Maybe the fb counter with trap blocking to slow the mlb.

Coaches,
We will see the 3-3 in at least 3 of our games this year. We are going to find a Center who can cut the NT. We will then send the PSG to the MLB, veer the PST for the stack LB, have the slot seal LB to S, and read the DT for the give and the OLB/SS for the pitch. We have tried area reading the stack and not had much luck. If they are blitzling the edge with the OLB/SS, I think you have to be able to throw the Wheel to the slot. I also like putting both SEs to the field in order to remove the OLB/SS and put a hat on the FS.

How about bellyoption vs the 33. Fb thru guard for lb run thru to safety. T base, guard pull look for safety,hb to corner ,se crack on olb. Qb pitch off de

When we are get a "STUD" nose in a stack look we will triple team the NG. Try and get the G/C/G to triple the NG into the Mike. This does force us to "Load" the Slot or TE. Vs a 3 count side we will still need to work the SE inside also. This may leave the plsd C unblocked. But all things considered that ain't to bad.

(or lack of brainstorming) normally to attack a 33 I would go unbalanced and run ov, rocket, and QB Ctr I have been drawing it up (what else is there to do @ school during the offseason?) and I came up with a midline trap - here it is: have both tackles veer release to the stacked LB. Have the BSG trap the nose. The Center would release BS and get a piece of the nose and work to Mike. The PSG would also go to Mike. QB open up like midline and the FB would run midline but cut off of the BSG's butt. Slots would make it look like triple - what do you think?

Coach Veer,
When you "load" the slot or TE does this mean you will block the Strong Saftey with the TE or Slot RB and read the Stack for pull and pitch?

colee, I like the idea, one more look to give that freekin Nose. It kind of reminds me of the "freeze" option with the midline look and the pulling guard. We've neer run it but we have a great tape from George De Leon at Syracuse he does a good job explain each assignment and technique invloved.
Are you still reading the Playside DE for give / pull? How are you acounting for the back side DE, assuming the FB can cut either front side or backside?
