I'm a bone guy....
Could someone explain the basic veer play out of splitback formation......
1. QB steps 2. Backs alignment 3. Dive back's path 4. Read Key 5. Is it best to TE or SE side?

We don't run out of SB veer any more but did a few years. Our bread and butter play was outside veer; we play 9 man. We did as follows: 1. QB Steps - Open out play side foot. Four step approach. Tougher to time the mesh than ISV. 2. RB alignment - Shade the guard in, w/ outside foot just outside crack of guard. 3. Back's path - Crack of T (or in 9 man, TE when not unbalanced 4. Read key - Outside man on LOS 5. We had better success to a non TE look; in order to run to 11 man look we unbalance the line. In that case, we generally would run ISV.

We play a team that runs this play at least 65% of their offensive plays. It can be a devastating play if you stick with it. For instance, the team I mentioned earlier has beaten us the last 3 seasons, every year we have a break down here, a breakdown there and they're off. They stick with it and eventually pop one. If the dive back is a good powerful runner, its a great play.
